A Comprehensive List of Investment Products

If you’re looking for a place to invest your money, you have a lot of options. Financial companies come out with new products to compete for investor dollars every few months. Below are what I consider to be the 10 most popular ways to invest money.

Individual Stocks – A share of stock represents a unit of ownership in a corporation. One way to make your money grow is to purchase a small piece of a corporation you believe will increase in value in the future. If the company does well by its shareholders, the value of your equity will increase. For example, if you owned Apple Computer stock in 2002 and held it through the whole “I-Pod” craze, you’d have made a hefty return on your money. This is b/c Apple has been earning a ton of money recently. Note: the opposite can occur, and you can lose money if the corporation you invest in has any number of problems. The value of your “share of stock” is determined by market perception.

Individual Bonds – This is not ownership in a corporation. Buying a bond is equivalent to you acting as a bank and lending money to a company. They agree to repay your principal investment + interest as a thank-you for lending them money. For example, a General Motors bond may cost you $1,000 and will pay you 6% per year for five years and return your thousand dollars to you at the end of the five years. This is a safer way to invest than individual bonds but you don’t have the chance at the 20 or 50% return you might see in the stock market.

Mutual Funds – This is the way to go for beginning investors. Mutual funds are a basket of stocks and bonds all bundled into a giant pool of money. They allow you to invest in more stocks and bonds than you could individually. It also provides you with the diversity which is highly recommended to be safe when investing in a variety of different stocks and bonds. Another positive feature of mutual funds is that they are actively managed by people who are (supposedly) very knowledgeable in the operations of their fund and can often outperform the overall stock market. This is true sometimes and not true other times but is a potential advantage to investing in mutual funds. The only downside to mutual funds is that they cost money. You often must pay a sales charge to obtain them, and then an expense ratio to the fund which pays for their operations. Still, this remains the best option for beginning or safe investors.

Unit Investment Trusts – These are similar to mutual funds in that they provide diversity for investors. The difference is that mutual funds are actively managed to provide the highest possible return. Unit Investment Trust’s buy and hold the same basket of stocks and/or bonds for the entire length of the trust. This way, you know what you are buying and how long you are holding it for. These trusts (like mutual funds) are available for just stocks, just bonds, or a mixture of both. They are often a bit cheaper to own than mutual funds and provide some of the same advantages.

Index (Exchange-Traded) Funds – This is my favorite style of investment. You get the same diversity provided by both mutual funds and unit investment trusts, but without the expenses. Index funds don’t attempt to outperform an index b/c they are the index. For example, the “Spider” is an index fund which tracks the 500 stocks in the S & P 500 index. Unlike a mutual fund (where the price is calculated at the end of each day) index funds trade like stocks do. Their price is determined by a buyer and a seller in the stock market. For this reason they are very cheap to own and provide the same upside as most mutual funds. The only reason not to buy an index fund is if you believe your mutual fund can dramatically outperform the index. If you trace the last 30 years of history, mutual funds and index funds tend to perform almost identically.

Closed-End Funds – These guys are similar to index funds in that they represent multiple holdings but their prices are determined daily by trading in the open market. These funds have a fixed number of shares issued at a public offering price and can trade at a “premium” or a “discount” to their actual values. If you buy a closed-end fund for income (such as a bond closed-end fund) it will pay you interest just like a bond or bond mutual-fund. The main difference is volatility. The fund may trade at as much as a 20% premium or discount to fair market value. They are cheaper to own than open-end mutual funds, so if you buy and hold, these are a great product.

Options – Options are a lot of fun but can be dangerous. They allow you to bet on timing, and volatility. They also allow you to hold a larger position of ownership of a stock than you could afford to pay for otherwise. If you buy 10 “calls” on a stock, it represents 1,000 shares. 1 call = 100 shares. You may pay a small price, $100/option for the right to buy this stock at a set price on a set date. Calls allow the buyer to purchase the stock at today’s price at some point in the future. Puts allow the buyer to sell the stock at today’s price at some point in the future. You can buy a put and a call at the same time if you are expecting overall volatility. Note: you have to qualify to trade options and can lose your hat if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Annuities – These are contracts sold by insurance companies. They are designed to provide payments to the annuity owner at specific times, usually after retirement begins. The owner is taxed on the holdings only when they start taking distributions or if they need to remove funds from the account. All annuities are tax-deferred, meaning that the earnings from investments in these accounts grow without tax until money is withdrawn. Annuity earnings are also tax-deferred so they cannot be withdrawn without penalty until a certain specified age. Annuities can be fixed or variable- fixed annuities guarantee a certain payment amount, while variable annuities let the money ride in stock and bond investments. Note: they do have the potential for greater returns. Both are relatively safe b/c of the “guarantee” aspect. An annuity has a death benefit equivalent to the higher of the current value of the annuity or the amount the buyer has paid into it. If the owner dies during the accumulation phase, his or her heirs will receive the accumulated amount in the annuity. This money is subject to ordinary taxes in addition to estate taxes.

Hedge Funds – Hedge funds are another personal favorite of mine but are generally limited to those investors with lots of money. The difference between a mutual fund and a hedge fund are the strategies they can use to invest. A mutual fund must buy and hold stocks and bonds to make a profit. They can’t sell short (bet against) a company, nor can they use arbitrage (trying to locate pricing errors in the markets). Hedge funds can do these things, plus use leverage (borrowed money) to create big positions for them. Hedge funds also pay themselves more for their services. They take expenses out of the fund + a % of profits that the fund earns.

All of these investment products are open to you! Some, such as mutual funds, only have a $1,000 minimum investment requirement. Stocks have no minimum (you can buy 1 share). However, you wouldn’t want to open an account to buy 1 share of stock b/c the costs involved with obtaining it from a broker would probably be more than the share of stock costs.

Is it right for Judges to Stick Strictly By the Book

I was just listening to our president saying judges should stick strictly by the book anand i was like ok fine. But the simple problem about this is that criminals are constantly rewriting their book of tricks to not leave any evidence in a crime they commit. The constitution was written back when there were not so many gadgets in hideing proof. such as automobiles, telephones, cellular phones, and just about anything else we can think of that can help a criminal avoid prosecution. Lets face it we have far to many unsolved crimes and the reason is that criminals are getting sneakier and sneakier by the minute to avoid any type of criminal prosecution. So really how can we afford to stick by the book. As long as a motive exsists. And prior criminal records all taken into consideration. We probably should have more prosecutions. The sad fact is that if a person is tried for the crime of murder. Had a motive and has had prior attempted murders, if nobody saw the guy do it then they go free. Although this approach may seem best, the simple fact remains is that someone comitted the crime. If any attorneys can give some advice on the matter, and can explain why are judges must be mindless drones to avoid all deceptions of a criminal and stick by the book would be helpful
